The Nervous System
The nervous system is a system that conducts information from the sensory receptors to the spinal cord and brain and it sends impulses to other body organs.
Parts of the nervous system
- Occipital cortex
- Parietal cortex
- Temporal cortex
- Frontal cortex
- Corpus callosum
- Pituitary
- Olfactory bulb
- Cranial nerves
- Thalamus
- Hypothalamus
- Inferior colliculus
- Superior colliculus
- Cerebellum
- Pons
- Ventricles
- Medulla
- Reticular formation
- Pyramidal tract
- Dorsal root ganglion
- Decussation of the pyramids
The function of the central Nervous system is to receives information and uses it throughout the body.
THe peripheral nervous system
The peripheral nervous system refers to parts of the nervous system outside the brian and spinal cord. It includes the cranial nerves, spinal nerves and their roots and branches, peripheral nerves, and neuromuscular junctions. In the peripheral nervous system, bundles of nerve fibers or axons conduct information to and from the central nervous system.
The brain is one of the body's most complex organs. It is the organ which controls our thoughts, our decisions, our other organ's functions, and our movements. All parts of the brain work together, but the brain can be divided functionally into three parts: forebrain, midbrain, hindbrain.
The forebrain is the largest part of the brain and stores memories, helps you at being able to plan, and allowing you to to think and imagine.
The midbrain is at the top of the brain stem. It controls reflexes, involuntary actions, and eye movement.
The hindbrain contains the cerebellum.

The spinal cord is part of the central nervous system. It is a bundle of nerves that passes through the bones of the vertebrae down the back. It sends sensations to and from the brain from the body.
The spinal cord has a primary role in the
nervous system.
Fun facts:
- The Nervous System is the main system connected to our spinal cord. Without our spine we would just be a big pile of smush!!
- Brain signals from the brain to the body or body to brain cross over on their way to the brain or vice-versa. Meaning that our right hemisphere controls our left side and our left hemisphere controls our right side. Reasons for this phenomenon are currently unknown.
- Our brain weighs about 3 pounds and makes up about 2% of our whole body weight.
